Die schönsten Gipfel der Alpen - Ein akustisches Hängemodell (2007)

Video documentation of a sound installation

A spatio-acoustic model of the Alps is installed in the upper foyer of the Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin. The alpine peaks - from the foreland to the 'highlights' are represented by radar tuning forks hanging from the ceiling on steel cables. The tuning forks are distributed in the geographically accurate scale of 1:33,000; the altitudes are converted into a linear elevated relief: the Sonnenberg as the farthest eastern peak of the Alps with 484m at ankle height, the Mont Blanc with 4,809m as the highest peak above head height. In analogy to the peaks they represent, the approx. 130 tuning forks are of different frequencies. The spectators wandering through the area of 24m x 13m walkable mountains can strike the tuning forks and produce an ever-changing acoustic panorama of Europe's youngest mountains, a floating sound relief.
